Senior cross country runner and track and field participant Evan Smith has earned the C. Eugene Cato Memorial Scholarship. This exclusive scholarship is awarded to just 12 Indiana student-athletes each year. Smith is the first Lake Central student to receive this scholarship in the last 10 years. The press release from the IHSAA can be read as an attachment. Much congratulations Evan! IHSAA Description of the award: "Currently in Indiana, more than 160,000 students from 411 different IHSAA member schools participate in high school athletics. The Indiana High School Athletic Association believes that the athletic arena is merely an extension of the classroom, and the lessons learned through participation will have a dramatic impact on today’s youth as they prepare to become the leaders of tomorrow. To reward the efforts of Indiana’s high school student-athletes, the IHSAA and IHSAA Foundation, Fortè Sports Medicine, the Indianapolis Colts, Indiana Pacers, Indiana Fever, Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, and Sport Graphics, Inc. have partnered in sponsoring the C. Eugene Cato Memorial Scholarship Awards. Each year, a minimum of 12 seniors are chosen from applicants throughout the state to receive a $2,500 scholarship for their high school accomplishments. These recipients are Indiana’s brightest stars and they embody everything that is right about high school sports. These well-rounded, positive role models have demonstrated excellence in academics, school and community involvement, character, sportsmanship, and citizenship." "Lake Central High School’s Evan Smith ranks first in his senior class of 780 students, maintaining a 4.67 weighted GPA. He participated in Cross Country and Track & Field for the Indians, earning a varsity letter for both sports in each of his four years. He has served as Team Captain for Cross Country and Track & Field and received Academic All-State honors in both sports. Evan is a member of Lake Central’s National Honor Society, Mentorship Ambassador Program, Student Council, Academic Letterwinners Club, and N-Teens. Smith’s volunteer experience includes work with the Salvation Army Angel Tree Toy Drive, St. Baldrick’s Foundation Assembly, and raising money for Lake Central’s athletic programs. Evan also works part-time for a local landscaping company. He will be attending Purdue University in the fall."
