The Lake Central girls golf team continued its tradition of excellence this weekend, capturing the IHSAA Regional Championship at Sandy Pines Golf Club and securing its third consecutive regional title. In a tightly contested tournament, the Indians came through with a championship performance, defeating rival Munster by just three strokes to claim the regional crown. Leading the way for the Indians was freshman Katelyn Benda, who earned a fourth-place individual finish with an outstanding round of 78. Teammate Piper Urbanski followed closely behind, placing fifth overall with a score of 79. The Indians received additional contributions from Maya Parks, who carded an 85, while Cora McCall and Alexandra Schilling each posted rounds of 100 to help secure the team championship. With the regional title secured, Lake Central now turns its attention to the biggest stage in Indiana high school girls' golf. The Indians will travel to Battle Ground Golf Club in Lafayette on Friday and Saturday to compete in the IHSAA State Finals, where they will look to cap off an exceptional season against the state's top programs. Congratulations to our student-athletes and coaches on this tremendous accomplishment! **Football Moves to 2-1 in the DAC The last two Fridays the Indians have looked like a different team. The boys have reeled off consecutive conference wins. The points are coming in bunches. This past weekend LC went on the road and defeated Michigan City 38-14. LC led 17-0 after 1; 17-7 at the half; and 21-7 after 3. Great performances occurred on both sides of the ball. QB Wes Lalich threw for 225 yards and 2 TD. He also scrambled for 31 yards, including a 26 yard run. Frankie Verta was his favorite target. He had 4 receptions for 133 yards and 2 TDs, including a 56 yard reception. Jonquil Sharpe added 83 yards in the air, including a 64 yard big play. Jayden Carpenter-Mansfield, Lalich, and Kenny Watson each added a rushing touchdown. The Indians will host Chesterton Friday for homecoming. **Boys' and Girls' XC Excel at the Highland Invite The girls' cross country won the Highland Invite with a score of 17, just a few points shy of a perfect score. They were led by Macey Thompson who was the overall champion with a running time of 17:40. Lana Bruggeman was runner-up with a time of 17:52, Chloe Neal was third with a time of 18:25, Willow Bruggeman was 4th with a time of 18:42, Sara Filippo was 7th, Aubrey Neal was 16th, and Isla Eggering was 20th. Macey was the top senior, Lana was the top junior, Sara was the top sophomore and Willow was the top freshmen. The girls will compete for another DAC championship on Saturday. The team performances was helped by Lucca Neves championship run. Neves not only won the Highland Invite in dominant fashion (nearly 18 seconds ahead of 2nd place) but also broke a 25 year old LCXC record. Neves' time of 15:15 is the new Lake Central cross country record. Neves beat Nick Kruse's record from 2000. Vince Pomilia earned a 10th place finish in 16:36. Trevor MacFarlane finished in 19th position with a time of 16:56, and Roman Kaszowicz was 20th in 16:57. The boys head to Michigan City for the DAC Championships this Saturday. LC had a fantastic performance finishing in 2nd place as a team. In round 1, the boys defeated Yorktown 4-1. In the semi-finals, LC defeated Muncie-Burris 3-2 to advance to the finals. The Indians were defeated by the host Delta team in the finals. Delta is ranked #6 in Indiana. The Indians look forward to opening postseason play against Calumet in the Highland Sectional this week.
